Mary “Mickey” Sobeck was born in Mississippi and raised in Gastoni, North Carolina after moving there as a child. She grew up with an older brother, who recently passed a few years ago. She considered herself a tomboy, as she greatly enjoyed playing ball and other sports with the boys . She graduated from Lowell High School, and enrolled in nursing school shortly after. Mickey was a nurse for ten years until moving on to her next career. She became a school bus driver, a position she held for 56 years.
Working in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, she met her husband, Fred, at the age of 34. He was in the Army and stationed at Fort Bragg. He stayed in the Army for 20 years. In 1973, Mickey and her husband moved to Germany for two years. She says it was a fantastic time; somewhere everyone should go see at least once in their life.
Together, Mickey and Fred had five children, four of which are still living today. She also has eight grandchildren and approximately 15 great grandchildren. She loves her family and thinks about them everyday.
Today, Mickey considers everyone here her family, staff and other elders alike. One of her favorite hobbies is working on puzzles, which she enjoys putting together and hanging them or giving them as gifts. Mickey is also a regular Bingo player who even enjoys winning prizes for other elders. She is a kind lady who always shows care and concern for others.
